Day 3

Friday 12 June 2009

Disruptive Technologies in Life Sciences - Technology Showcase

Disruptive technologies are innovations which have the potential to fundamentally affect the status quo, changing the industry paradigm and superseding the established technology in a given sector. This year we will focus on three key disruptive technologies: stem cell technology, systems biology and personalised medicine.
Each session will be introduced by an industry speaker who will give a perspective on the latest technology developments in the sector, followed by a showcase of cutting-edge academic research. Partnering sessions will also take place throughout the day.

Stem Cell Technology

09:55

Industry Perspective

The translation of stem cell science into a therapy (cell therapy, regenerative medicine, stem cell simulation and migration in vivo) and its role in drug discovery and drug development will be examined in this session. The session will also address the role of academics and the
value of public sector funded research to industry.

Chairing the session:
Dr Miriam Bibel, Senior Research Investigator, Neuroscience/Neurodegeneration, Novartis

10:10

Academic Technology Showcase

Spotlight on the latest research on stem cell sciences from London Technology Network’s Business Fellows.

Speakers include:

  • Professor Robin Franklin,
    University of Cambridge
  • Dr Mark Lewis, Eastman Dental Institute, UCL
  • Professor Liam Gray, University of Southampton
  • Dr Harry Witchel, University of Sussex

Systems Biology

11:40

Industry Perspective

One of the core aims of systems biology is to approach and explore biological processes from a systemic view; observing effects in multiple closely-related systems. This session will address new developments centred on our ability to record, integrate and comprehend data from a wide range of experimental sources using multiple techniques including: mathematical modelling; metabolomics; proteomics; and transcriptomics.

Chairing the session:
Dr Gerhard Engel, Senior Manager, Accelrys Ltd

11:55

Academic Technology Showcase

Spotlight on the latest research on systems biology from London Technology Network’s Business Fellows.

Speakers include:

Personalised Medicine

14:00

Industry Perspective

The growth of personalised medicine has led to the increased interest in the identification, development and validation of biomarkers. In this session we will explore the current technologies spanning the life and physical science fields that are responsible for allowing
the detection and development of biomarkers to become a commercial reality. We will also address the use of biomarkers in inflammatory disorders and look at the future implications of personalised medicine for the healthcare industry and its potential benefits for patient care.

Chairing the session:
Dr Chris Chamberlain, BioMarker Expert, Roche

14:15

Academic Technology Showcase

Cluster Presentation Session

Biotechnology as an industry in Europe is relatively young, with its roots in the early biotechnology companies which emerged in the 1980’s through entrepreneurs such as Sir Christopher Evans whose first company was set up in the Cambridge region. In this session we hear company presentations from three global leading regions.
